RDASI Newsletter - December 2000

A message from the CEO

RDA Southern Inland has been very busy this last month. Hosting and attending different events around our region with the support of our community. It has been wonderful to attend in person, experiencing all our region has to offer.

We are also very proud to have become a part of the Regional Activators Alliance, an initiative that is all about promoting opportunities to live, work and invest in regional Australia. So make sure to stay tuned for the opportunities that arise from this!

The first event of the Food in the Capital series went off without a hitch, proving COVID restrictions don't have to get in the way of a good day out in the ACT. Being the first of it's kind sustainable food event for Canberra and the surrounding region, it was well received by all attendees, including RDASI. We were proud to be there promoting our great region, showcasing a number of businesses at our sponsor stall. It was interesting to hear about the latest in food innovation and what is yet to come.

As the month was drawing to a close, RDASI staff and Committee members ventured to the Yass Valley region on the 19th and 20th November, to visit and meet with local businesses and hold our last Committee meeting for 2020. After a long period of zoom meetings, the Committee and staff were delighted to host their Committee meeting in Yass and meet local community and business leaders. You can read our media release about our visit.

SISP Update

It was a relief in Term 4 to be able to get back into a small number of schools to run some STEM challenge days and activities. Over the past 2 weeks, we were able to visit Wollondilly Public, Goulburn High, Boorowa Central School, Glenquarry Public and Crookwell Public to deliver a number of STEM activities and challenges. In groups and with limited materials, students were tasked with challenges like; constructing the longest chain, building a hovercraft, building the tallest tower and building the strongest bridge.

Unfortunately, the 2021 SISP program is facing significant financial constraints, however, with support from schools and industry, we are confident the program will continue, perhaps in a slightly different format. RDA Southern Inland will no longer assist in the delivery of SISP, however, we will assist with the transition in the early new year.

We have been honoured to be a part of the extremely successful SISP program and that we were selected as a pilot region for the program in 2018. The program has significant momentum and has expanded to over 30 schools in 2020. In what has been a challenging year, the program has assisted schools and students to integrate STEM into the classroom and engage with industry. We look forward to the continuing success of the program.

SEGRA Webinar Conversation 33

As we plan recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s much talk of ‘building back better’. But what does better actually look like, and how do we get there?

In this webinar, Prof. Alex Hannant from The Yunus Centre at Griffith University takes a look at what ‘better’ could mean in the context of social and economic recovery, and the ways of working that can turn challenging times into opportunity. Register here.

Flexible Lifestyle Survey

NBN have released the Flexible Lifestyle Survey which has some interesting findings around those wishing to work remotely as a result of the experience through Covid-19. This could potentially be very positive for Regional Australia. Please follow this link to find out more.
