Fixed Wireless and Satellite Upgrade Program

As you may be aware an investment of $480m by the Australian Government and $270m by nbn to enable the Fixed Wireless and Satellite Upgrade Program will benefit homes and businesses across Australia, the majority in regional areas.

  • Faster Fixed Wireless wholesale speeds enabling two new high speed Fixed Wireless tiers with potential maximum wholesale download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and 250 Mbps*^. nbn is currently in the process of consulting with industry in relation to these higher speed tier products.

  • Extending the Fixed Wireless Footprint coverage by up to 50% to enable up to 120,000 existing nbn Sky Muster satellite-only premises to access nbn Fixed Wireless for the first time. The program has also delivered enhanced data limits across the nbn Sky Muster satellite network.

  • Improved Fixed Wireless typical wholesale busy period speeds: Fixed wireless network improvements are expected to allow nbn to implement a new measure to indicate the network’s capability to achieve ‘typical average wholesale busy period speeds’ of at least 50Mbps (download).

The upgrade has already commenced.

  • To deliver the Fixed Wireless upgrades, nbn need to replace some of the hardware on our fixed wireless towers, which means some planned outages that may impact your ability to use your Fixed Wireless nbn service while the work is underway.

  • Residents and businesses should be notified of these outages via their retail service provider. They can also check the status page on the nbn website under the Network Status section by entering their address

  • The time required to perform these upgrades means the work will have to be carried out outside the Planned Outage Windows, as it is not practicable to perform the work within the Planned Outage Window.

Impacted homes and businesses will be notified of any outages via their retail service provider. Information will also be available via the network status page on the nbn website nbn.com.au/outages

Fibre Connect
More than two million additional Australian households are ready to order a full fibre nbn connection as part of the program to evolve the nbn® network.
The significant milestone means a record number of Australians can now enjoy the benefits of a faster and more reliable service.
Full fibre offers customers access to the highest residential speed tiers, which deliver a better and more reliable internet experience for homes and businesses.
More speed means the whole family can be online at the same time: videoconferencing for work, enjoying crystal clear movies or next level gaming.
Full fibre can deliver wholesale download speeds of close to 1 Gbps, delivering a better experience, including more consistent speed and minimal interruptions during online video calls.

These upgrades are part of the nbn fibre upgrade program – which was boosted by the Australian Government’s additional $2.4 billion investment.

nbn is on track to enable up to 10 million premises, or up to 90 per cent of fixed-line homes and businesses across Australia to access nbn Home Ultrafast (currently at 61 per cent), offering wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps, by the end of 2025.

To trigger an upgrade, customers at eligible premises need to place an order with a retailer which is based on an eligible speed tier.
